In the heart of underground Syracuse, the Catacomb of San Giovanni opens up as a labyrinth of galleries, arcosolia, and monumental rotundas, bearing witness to the expressive power of early Christianity in Sicily.

Beyond the Basilica of San Giovanni, you enter the main gallery, along which thousands of burials unfold. Among them stand out richly decorated tombs, frescoes such as the one depicting the Syracusan Virgin crowned by Christ, and monumental cisterns transformed into chapels, including the Rotunda of Marina, the Rotunda of Adelfia, and the Cubiculum of Pope Eusebius.

These spaces, of extraordinary grandeur, testify to the prestige of the Christian community of Syracuse, second only to Rome in size and importance. Following the interplay of light and shadow, one rediscovers a world where death was not the end, but a passage to eternal life, celebrated with rites, prayers, and offerings, in a dimension of faith that time has not erased.

The Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista

An Ancient Sacred Site Under the Open Sky

Built in the 6th century, the Basilica of San Giovanni stands on the site where, according to tradition, Saint Marcian, the first bishop of Syracuse, was buried. Long considered the city’s first Cathedral, it was divided into three naves by twelve fluted columns—a symbolic number recalling the Apostles. Today, among the remains of the colonnade and the apse in local stone, the original layout can still be clearly read, rich in charm and history.

Numerous earthquakes have attempted to destroy it, yet the Basilica of San Giovanni has risen again each time, preserving its sacred character. Its two façades—Norman and Gothic-Catalan—announce the importance of this millenary site.
The Normans enriched the structure with an imposing central rose window, while in the 15th century the majestic Gothic-Catalan façade was added, still perfectly visible today.
Walking through the central nave, one has the impression of moving through history, immersed in an atmosphere that blends spirituality and memory, bearing witness to the evolution of Christianity in Syracuse.

The Crypt of Saint Marcian

The Crypt of Saint Marcian is one of the most evocative places in Syracuse, where history, art, and spirituality intertwine. This ancient sacred space, carved into the rock, is divided into three areas that have served different functions over time: from a Christian burial site to a place of worship and veneration.

The walls are adorned with 13th-century frescoes depicting saints, apostles, and sacred figures, emerging from the dim light and creating an atmosphere of reflection and devotion.

The architecture of the crypt blends late Byzantine and medieval elements, with arches separated by massive stone walls and sculpted capitals depicting the four Evangelists.
In one of the side recesses lies the fenestella confessionis, linked to the burial of Saint Marcian, the first bishop of Syracuse. His tomb, aligned with the basilica above, testifies to the deep connection between the memory of the Saint and the church.
