<strong>Temple of Athena <\/strong>in the 5th century BC, it still preserves the imposing Doric columns incorporated into the walls. Transformed into a <strong>Christian church<\/strong> in the <strong><strong>7th century AD<\/strong><\/strong>, it was stripped of its furnishings and decorations during the Arab domination, before being reconsecrated by the <strong>Normans<\/strong> in <strong>1085<\/strong>. After the <strong>earthquake of 1693<\/strong>, its fa\u00e7ade was rebuilt in splendid <strong>Sicilian Baroque style<\/strong>, giving the <strong>Cathedral of Syracuse<\/strong> the scenographic appearance that today dominates <strong>Piazza Duomo<\/strong>. Cicero described it in the Verrines as a <strong>magnificent temple<\/strong>, adorned with <strong>27 paintings depicting Sicilian kings and tyrants<\/strong>, while the entrance doors were embellished with <strong>gold and ivory<\/strong> friezes. The temple, which stood on a large <strong>crepidoma<\/strong> measuring <strong>56 metres<\/strong> in length and <strong>22 metres<\/strong> in width, was a <strong>hexastyle peripteral structure,<\/strong> doubly in antis. The six columns on the front fa\u00e7ades and the fourteen along the sides rose <strong>eight metres<\/strong> from a three-stepped <strong>stylobate<\/strong>, with a lower diameter of <strong>1.90 metres<\/strong>. Each column featured <strong>20 flutes<\/strong>, while <strong>the capitals<\/strong> adhered to the <strong>classical canons<\/strong> of the <strong>Doric order<\/strong>.<br \/>xThe pronaos faced east, while the opisthodomos faced west.    Even today, visitors can admire the <strong>stylobate<\/strong> on which the columns rest from the exterior of the Cathedral, along with the <strong>architrave<\/strong>, <strong>triglyphs<\/strong>, and <strong><strong>plain<\/strong> metopes<\/strong>. During the <b>Arab domination (878\u20131091)<\/b>, it was stripped of its furnishings and decorations. With the arrival of the <b>Normans<\/b>, the walls of the <b>central nave<\/b> were raised and seven <b>splayed windows<\/b> were opened to improve interior lighting. The interior was enriched with <b>altars<\/b> and elegant <b>decorative stuccoes<\/b>.  <\/p>\n<p>Between the <b>18th<\/b> and <b>19th centuries<\/b>, the Cathedral experienced a period of decline, leading to its closure in <b>1906<\/b> due to structural issues.
