elementor-size-default\">An Ancient Church above the Roman Pools<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c99bd5a elementor-widget class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Church of <b>San Nicol\u00f2 dei Cordari<\/b>, built in the <b>Norman period<\/b>, stands above the <b>Roman Pool<\/b>, a large rock-cut water reservoir that was part of the ancient <b>water system of Syracuse<\/b>. This structure, possibly already used for sacrificial rites near the <b>Altar of Hieron II<\/b>, supplied the <b>Amphitheatre<\/b> in Roman times and was used for naumachiae, spectacular mock naval battles. The architecture of the <b>church<\/b> is simple and solemn, with a single nave and a semicircular apse. Narrow slits along the walls create a mystical atmosphere by filtering natural light.
